Ken Falcon goes RTI for Sailability
10/5/2013
Ken Falcon intends to circumnavigate the Isle of Wight in his Solo on June 1st, the same day as the Round The Island race, to raise money for Sailability.
Ken Falcon intends to circumnativate the Isle of Wight in his Solo on June 1st, the same day as the Round The Island race, to raise money for Sailability. He says;
"I am in the process of preparing to sail around the Isle of Wight on 1st June whilst the Round Island Yacht race is taking place. I will be sailing my Solo, the singled-handed racing dinghy in aid of 'Sailability', the RYA's unit for assisting disabled sailors, which is a wonderful cause."
"The entire circumnaviagtion of the Island, a distance of about 60 miles, will take me about 16 hrs. I'll be launching from Stokes Bay Sailing club at about 03.00hrs and sail to Cowes (in the dark) so that I start before the first RTI start at 05.00hrs. As you know, there will be some 1600 boats taking part, so I should be in great company. If, due to adverse conditions, I can't go on 1st, then I will reschedule for 2nd, 15th, or 16th."
"I will be paying my own expenses, i.e. travelling costs etc. in order to maximise income to Sailability. I will be accompanied by a rib - just in case."
"If you would like to donate, no matter how small, or large, every penny counts, then use the following link www.justgiving.com/Ken-Falcon or, if you prefer, contact the NSCA secretary for my postal address and send me a cheque made payable to 'RYA Sailability'."
"For more information on the Charity and the work the RYA do, you can look at www.rya.sailability.co.uk"
"If you get a chance, please circulate this information to anyone you think might be interested and/or who you think might be glad to give a donation."
The National Solo is a classic, one-design, single handed dinghy. Designed by Jack Holt in 1956,the Solo remains a popular dinghy, sailed at manyclubs in the UK, Holland and Australia.
Originally designed in wood, competitive boats are now widely available in Foam Reinforced Plastic (FRP) or composite construction (FRP hull and wood deck) as well as wood.
